“MUNSHI SHIELD”
Bhavan Kala Kendra’s Inter-Collegiate Drama Competition

Bharatiya Vidya Bhavan – Kala Kendra has been organizing Inter Collegiate Drama Competition since 1951. It has proved to be not just a competition but also a Theatrical Movement. Bhavan has an honor of providing a number of outstanding talents to the mainstream theatre, graduated from this competition. Here one gets to see a very high level of intensity, vigor & variety of ideas with revolution. This kind of Theatre Movement plays a pivotal role in building a strong foundation for Future Theatre.

This Competition was originally started in the year 1951 in 13 languages that went on for about 16 years after which, due to unfortunate circumstances, it was closed down.

In 1986, Shri Giresh Desai, the then Director of Programmes, along with two of his friends re-started the competition in six languages (Hindi, Marathi, Gujarati, Urdu, English and Sanskrit) under the sponsorship of Copwud Performing Arts naming it as the “Copwud Inter-collegiate One-Act Drama Competition”. In the year 1989-90, the sponsorship dried up and the Bhavan continued the competition under the Kala Kendra.
Over the years, the competitions have produced leading Film, T.V. and Stage stalwarts. Bharatiya Natya Shikshapeeth (1991)
Academy of Acting & Direction.



The Bharatiya Natya Shikshapeeth teaches basic acting and direction.
Here in ACTING STUDIO one learns to know his potential and brings out the hidden talent within him through various basic subjects like Body Control – Yoga – Concentration – Movement – Individual / Group • Mental Control – Memory Exercises / Games – Imagination – Improvisation – Observation – Expression – Communication – Story Telling • Music – Voice Control – Tonal – Emotional – Projection – Pitch – Speech & Diction • Reading Scripts – Understanding – Appreciation – Discussion – Analyzing – Elements Of Scripts – Working On Text • Thought Process – Characterisation – Development – Director’s View Point • Craft & Choreography – Use & Purpose • Light – Sound – Music – Backstage – Functional, Supporting & Decorative – Practical.

The students of Natya Shikshapeeth have made their mark in Gujarati and Hindi Theatre, serials and films as Writers, Directors and Artists. Since last 18 years, Natya Shikshapeeth has trained more than 500 individuals as actors, actresses and technicians and they have successfully made their place in the field of entertainment.

We have included classes for Appreciation of Classic Films. We also have a small library for students, where they can refer the text connected to Acting, Direction, Writing, Set Designing, Light Designing, Music, and Make-up in theatre, serials & films. Contact: Shri Kamlesh Mota - 98201 98005

Bhavans Experimental Theatre (1991)

‘Bhavan Experimental Theatre’ provides a platform for new and upcoming talent in the theatre field. The essential factor of this experimental theatre is that any individual, amateur or a professional, new and aspiring or experienced theatre artist belonging to any theatre group can perform free of cost. The theatre is held on every second and fourth Saturday of each month. One-act plays, monologues and full–length plays in different languages like Urdu, Marathi, English, Hindi and Gujarati are performed. Contact: Prafull Parab - 98208 65784

Yoga Darshan Academy.

Started in 1994. The facility of Yoga Darshan Academy availed by more than 1200 students every year. Here in Yoga Darshan Academy this student are trained scientifically to control diseases like Asthma, Arthritis, Blood Pressure, Back Pain, Diabetes, Depression/Stress/ Tension, Menopause, Obesity. Lectures, Seminars & demonstration are conducted freely under the eminent doctors. The subjects were Yoga & Daily life, Physical & Mental fitness through Yoga, Yoga-Culture of Today, Meditation, Yoga & Asans, Yoga & Beauty, Diet, Yoga & Naturopathy, Yoga & Sangeet and Open Eye Education.
Till now the yoga facilities were availed to Females only but, from the month of August it has been made available for Males also. The Yoga Darshan Academy is conducted by Smt. Chaturang Chess Club.

The Chaturanga Chess Club started in 1998. Here child learns to play chess and compete in chess matches. Chess teaches them to think, plan, anticipate to other person move. This helps to child discipline forward looking, positive, & teach him how to plan his life and prepare him to face all the problems in today’s competitive world. Around 2300 children have learnt the art of this game. The classes are conducted by Shri Johny Shah & Shri Anand Raman.

Balbharati (Children Activities)

Summer Camp for kids with entertainment ‘Acting Ki Pathshala’, designed by Dr. Amul Shah & Smt. Vanalata Mehta is schedule in month of May. At the end of summer camp participants with their own creativity showcased Dance, Dramas & Musical Items at Pathshala. In this Pathshala students get chance to built their personality. They learn something more than in school. Here they excel in group activities. They also learn different languages while mingling with other students. Exhibition of Art and Craft work done by these kids, keeps their creativity high.

Shri Giresh Desai (Bhausaheb) Open Hindi one-Act Drama Competition .

Competition is organized on 1st April, (Final Round) every year by the Ex–Students of Bharatiya Natya Shikshapeeth in association with Kala Kendra in the fond Memory of Shri Giresh Desai (Actor / Director / Producer & Ex Director of Program of Kala Kendra). In Mumbai There is no other open competition in Hindi language except this & hence this competition gives the platform to other those amateur artist who are not in college. Any individual or any theater group can participate in this competition.
